HEIKAL RECEIVES THE PRESIDENT AND MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL PRESS AUTHORITY

H.E. Mr. Osama Heikal, Egypt State Minister of Information, held a meeting today with the president of the National Press Authority, Mr. Karam Gabr and its members to discuss current press issues.
At the beginning of the meeting, Heikal stressed the importance of preserving the independence of the National Press Authority and that the most important issue nowadays is the press technological development and reform. He added that this meeting is considered the first in a series of future meetings tackling the future of the national press, solving its problems and laying the foundations of its development.
During the meeting, both parties agreed to meet very soon with the ministers of planning and social insurance to discuss the problems facing the national foundations. That’s in addition to another meeting to discuss the problems facing the press institutions and finding means for paying its debts. The meeting also discussed the importance of the current press institutions elections mentioning that their boards will be actually responsible for their management. He said they would be held accountable in front of real general assemblies, the matter which will definitely make a big difference in their type of management.
Moreover, there will be another meeting to discuss media and press content due to its great impact in raising people’s awareness, pointing out that it is very important to address youths appropriately, as they represent 65% of the population.
For his part, the president of the National Press Authority confirmed the importance of this meeting in laying the foundations of development and reform, pointing out that a number of meetings were held with various categories working in the press field to introduce this concept, in addition to knowing the opinion of veteran writers about it. He said finally, we found a general opinion inside these institutions ready to embrace the process of press reform and development.
At the end of the meeting, there was an open discussion between the minister and the Authority members to know their opinion and expectations regarding the Press status quo especially in the light of the state interest in the national press institutions.
